On Saturday, Sept. 14, thousands of fans braved the unrelenting South Florida sun at Palm Beach International Raceway™ (PBIR) to view the spectacle that is Ford Fun Weekend. The facility, which has been home to the PRO Winter Warm-up for several years, as well as the Nitro Jam, Citrus Nationals, and even an ARCA event, welcomed a parade of Mustangs, F150s, and other Ford and not so Ford powered dragsters, each intent on conquering the 1/4 mile all concrete dragstrip.
Their sponsors, DV8 Motorsports, Aeromotive and Revell, helped to provide virtually non-stop on and off track activity. Though most attendees were there for the race, a main attraction of the event was the Ford car and truck show presented by South East Rods & Customs. A myriad of mostly Ford labeled automobiles were on display behind the main grandstands, showcasing old and new technology in an aesthetically pleasing way. In addition to the car show, shoppers were able to peruse through a large Swap Meet and Car Corral presented by RacingJunk.com, where almost every part you can imagine was up for sale.
Of course, we can't forget the little ones. Future and budding race fans, for whom the static and rolling displays may not be enough for, were able to participate in a Revell Make ’n’ Take model building experience. If only the full sized race cars were as easy to put together as the pint sized ones!
The day consisted of two rounds of eliminations in the True Street Shootout presented by VMP Superchargers, as well as a Mustang Triathlon on the Drag Strip presented by Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords Magazine. For fans of higher horsepower and even faster speeds, the day also included a Pro Show with 2 jet cars and 8 Pro Mods.
For everyone who wasn't able to attend today's action, don't fret. The show continues Sunday, September 15, from 8 am to 6 pm, as the Mega Mopar Action Series presented by AfterHours Mopar Performance and Aeromotive takes to the track. Tomorrow's event follows the same basic format as the Ford Fun Weekend, but with a MOPAR twist.
It includes drag racing on PBIR’s impressive 1/4-mile concrete Drag Strip, featuring the Dodge Challenger Shootout presented by S&W Race Cars as well as a Pro Show with jet cars, wheel stander and pro mods. The Swap Meet and Car Corral presented by RacingJunk.com will also return, as will the car show. Though a couple Fords may neak into the lineup for the show, the event will focus on Mopar, Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge cars and trucks, and is presented by South East Rods & Customs
Tickets for the event are $20 for a 1-day adult admission, and are available at the gate or online. Children ages 6 to 12 are $5 per event day, while children ages 5 and under enter free. Parking at the facility is free for all racers and spectators.
Everyone knows the economy is still a bit rough, and disposable income now isn't quite as disposable as it once was. When you think of it, though, thee aren't many places you can go and have a full day of fun for $20. If you truly have a love for speed, visit Palm Beach International Raceway, and support your local racetrack!
