As the episode begins, Les comes into Seth’s office to discuss the price of gold. It has dropped again, and at 25% lower than the same time last year, this means everything they paid $100 for, is now worth $75.
As a man wheels a few boxes into the shop, Seth and Ashley see Star Trek and NASA items. Although both sister and brother have no interest in these items, they are hot sellers to trekkies. Many of the things are authentic and provided by the networks. The lowest he will take is $1,200, then he lowers the price to $1,000. Ashley counts out eight one-hundred-dollar bills, and the man sells. Good job!
When Ashley asks Bobby Jay to help her put them on the floor, he tells her that he has no room. He has no room to put anything in the back to make room for these items either. When Ashley tells Les and Seth about the dilemma, Seth knows a man who is a consultant and can help them sell more merchandise, and they agree to call him in.
Meanwhile, a man is at a window and wants to pawn an item. The sign on the wall says to bring in a pawn ticket from another shop, and they will give 20% more for the item than the other shop. This man wants his $20 now. He has no pawn ticket from another shop, but he insists that they give him an extra $20 on his loan for $100. He received an escort out the door.
When the man comes in to assess the shop, and will be giving the family his assessment in a few hours.
A woman wants to pawn her baby’s car seat. New regulations state that it must have a base, but there is no base. Ashley will not take it without the base. When she curses out Ashley, Byron carries the car seat out to the parking lot, as she screams and curses and clutches the seat. He winds up dragging her out the door as she will not let go. In the parking lot, she throws the parking cones at them and finally takes the seat and leaves.
A man comes in with a jar of graveyard dirt. He claims that it has magical healing powers. He wants $100 for it. He has researched this and found that just an ounce is worth $25, and he has eight ounces. Les knows that it is a gimmick item and gives him $12 for the dirt. As the man leaves, another man comes up to Les and sees what happened. Les tells him he will sell it to him for $100 or one-quarter of it for $25. The man buys the quarter, and Les scoops it out for the man as the expert consultant looks on.
A man with a ring walks up to Ashley and wants $5,000 for it. Ashley checks it out and will only offer him $1,800 for it. After a bit of haggling, the man sees that he is not going to get his price, he takes out his dentures and tries to hand them to Ashley and then walks out as she is totally grossed out by his action.
When the consultant is finished with his assessment, he meets with the family. He says that they have a good store, he tells Les that Seth is an asset, the technology is good and the online store is operating well, and the sales people are good. He then tells him that they have a lot of problems. The problem is they are putting perfume on a pig. They have all the great technology, but a warehouse full of junk, lots of wasted space and should get a dumpster and throw much stuff away so they can make a profit from the area filled with junk. They have rows of fur coats, which Les sees as rows of money. He asks about the fifty or sixty air conditioners that are sitting in the back in the dead of summer that are sitting in a heap. Les is furious; this guy may be a retail consultant, but Les knows how to run a pawn shop and sends him out of the shop with a handshake.
Now Seth wonders if thing did not change, if there is a future in the pawn business on this episode of "Hardcore Pawn."
