First, the good news is you do not need to buy any software for hard drive maintenence.
Second, you can schedule these to run automatically in your computer.
Third, the computer will run better for it.
First, clean out all of the Temporary Files your computer has collected. See this article "How Do I Find Windows Temporary Files?"
Files in these temporary directoris can be removed. Windows provides a utility to clean up these files, however, by default it leaves 7 days of files behind. The utility is Disk Cleanup.
Second, Remove the Temporary Internet Files. This option is found in your Interent Browser menu option under Tools. See articles on FIreFox and Internet Explorer 8.
Third, Run the Defrag utility in the Applications, System tools in Windows XP. Typing Defrag in Vista's search will locate it for you.
These things done regularly will help keep the system hard drive running smoothly. Defrag will take awhile, so start it before you retire for the evening and check it in the morning. Defrag will take less time if you run it often.
