Jim Harbaugh spoke to the media on Monday afternoon after the 23-13 win over the St. Louis Rams. Joe Staley left the game with a sprained MCL, similar to what Mike Iupati suffered in Week 11 against the Saints.
The head coach was unable to provide no updates to both players. Iupati has missed the last two games while Staley was out for the final 52 minutes of Sunday's game.
"Today will be an important day to check with [both players]," Harbaugh said. "We have good hopes. We'll wait and see what [the exams] reveal. We're very hopeful for the best, playing for the worst."
A streak of 26 consecutive games with the same five start offensive linemen was snapped in Week 12 against the Washington Redskins with Iupati out. Joe Looney stepped in at right guard while incumbent RG switched to his original position of LT for the remainder of the game. Prior to Sunday, Looney made his NFL debut against the Redskins by playing three snaps in the fourth quarter.
If both players are out for a few weeks, the pass protection proved to be adequate after a slow first half. In the second half, Colin Kaepernick had time to throw the ball without problem.
The biggest concern was the running game, where Frank Gore had a paltry 42 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown run. It will need to improve if the 49ers want to have a balanced attack going forward.
With Iupati and Staley hurt, Looney will be getting more reps in practice at the RG position. The 49ers had him inactive for the entire 2012 season as he came off an injury when drafted.
