Although I may be a day or two late, it's better late than never right?! I think that everyone is still in a transitional haze between years and moments this week as I have found it a blur trying to schedule anything in my own personal calendar- more or much less on here or other social media spots. Maybe it's a change in perspective after surviving another so-called apocalypse :)
That said, here are a few things that jumped on my radART this week. I'd like to briefly share it with you as a beautiful accompaniment to your own schedule. First, this Friday might inspire you in more ways that one. One way specifically, you might try to stroll over to the always intriguing The Plowhaus Gallery on 729 Porter Road in order to check out "Nashville Portraits Show." The show will feature photography by Robin Dodd and Mickey Bernal. Dodd will be debuting her Portraits of East Nashville Women: a series of works featuring the female movers and shakers of East Nashville seen through Dodd's unique and beautiful vision. Bernal will counter with colorful portraits of Nashville's equal male standouts. It will show from 6-9pm with wine and live music.
Saturday night will allow you to enjoy yet another First Saturday Downtown Art Crawl at all of the usual and extraordinary (much better to use than unusual) art galleries and spots about and around The Arcade. First, you can catch the closing reception for Tinny Contemporary and Hyunmee Lee's "Silent Gestures." It has been quite the success and this will be one last party for the show. Lee's large, abstract canvases delight in the union of opposites, where vast fields of carefully delineated color and expanses of blacks and wits intermix with expressive lines and painterly brushstrokes. Simply, it is pretty, amazing, and pretty amazing.
Also, down the street and around the corner at The Arts Company on 5th Avenue of the Arts, they will be ringing in the New Year with "Of Things To Come." It is a gallery tradition of previewing new work, new artists, and new plans for the New Year. This year will include Judy Nebhut, Brad Wreyford, Robin Venable Kenny, and Denise Stewart-Sanabria. There will be plenty of photography, paintings, and sculptures to go around for all art lovers. Beginning January 5th, from 6-9pm, and continuing through January 25th, this show will blow you away.
Another thing that will blow you away is the Disposables show at the Downtown Presbyterian Church from 6-9pm on Saturday. It is a benefit for The Contributor featuring photography by homeless and formerly homeless newspaper vendors. It is FREE admission, with $5 suggested donation, food by Porter Road Catering, and entertainment by Whit and Al Hill, Adam Chaffins with Millicent Martin, Lynn Taylor with Graham Gray. It will blow you away with the art and humanities we are surrounded by on a daily basis.
But isn't what 2013 is all about … blowing you away in a pleasant way? I do believe so. So why stop doing the best of what we've started in 2012, you ask? No question about it, we will not stop having amazing shows with East Side Storytellin'. This coming Tuesday, January 8th, we will host our next show at Rumours East with some of the best people I know in town. You can visit the happy hour from 5-7pm, but at 7pm you better get to your seats that you already reserved to witness the first East Side Storytellin' of 2013- a year where we really take off with ideas. The featured author will by Cary Graham (writer of "Remnant") and the musical stylings of married couple that will totally folk you up, Jenny & Tyler. Seriously guys and gals, it is a must see experience, and it's FREE! All you have to do is call Rumours East at 615-262-5346. You don't want to miss out. You know you don't!
