Happy New Year

Million of us get together to celebrate the birth of another year across the world.

Like other holidays, this day also brings us together. Families spend time with each other and friends get together to hope for a better and more meaningful year of their lives.

The most important thing is to pray during this special transition between time. In Islam, prayer rules everything. A new year brings many possibilities and many new opportunities just like the year that passed us. However, with a new year same ordeals or even greater predicaments await us. The only thing that can protect us against the calamities of life is prayer.

In the Holy Quran , God tells the story of Prophet Adam, who learnt the words of prayer from God. As a Muslim , I believe that Adam was the first modern human being who was shown what morality truly means. At the birth of mankind, prayer was at forefront.

"Then Adam learnt from his Lord certain words of prayer. So He turned towards him with mercy. Surely, He is Oft-Returning with compassion, and is Merciful," the Holy Quran, 2:38.

The Holy Quran also states that one should pray to become more humble in spirit. With the economic, social and political calamities that await us, it would be nice to become more humble and reflect at the start of this new year.

Could we save our world from famine, war, poverty, rape and all kinds of evils that permeate our lands? I believe the answer is prayer and effort.

Let us begin this year with prayers and thoughts of complete reformation. We can only change the world if we change ourselves.
