An ordinance to reduce toys in fast food meals targeted for children passed on Tuesday with an 8-3 vote by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. The new law requires a limitation on calories, sodium and fat and a serving of fruits or veggies to be included in each meal.
The legislation will be effective as of December 2011, if it is not vetoed by the city’s Mayor Gavin Newsom. The Board may still approve the measure after a veto.
The idea behind the ban is to aid in childhood obesity. Those against the measure think the law restricts a parental right to make choices for their children.
