Happy hour in Durango, Colorado

Planning a Colorado mountain vacation to get away from the Dallas heat?

Chimayo, downtown Durango
Happy Hour at Chimayo, downtown Durango

Maybe you’ll end up in the San Juan mountains of southwestern Colorado near Durango, a high desert town, with lots of sunshine, cool nights and loads of outdoor fun.

And maybe you’ll be having so much fun around Durango you’ll need to take a break for a relaxing afternoon appetizer, cocktail, or glass of wine.

A few favorite places to do just that:

Chimayo Stone Fried Kitchen opens at 4 and has cool garage door windows that open up so you can sit right next to the sidewalk where you can people watch and still get that outdoors feeling. Chimayo also has a big bar and lots of other seating in the dining area. They’re known for scrumptious wood fired pizzas, but appetizers like the queso fundido are a treat for your taste buds. Chimayo’s drinks have to be the strongest drinks in town; at about $10 apiece they really feel like three regular cocktails most anywhere else. Try Chimayo’s signature Manhattan or Margarita concoctions. (862 Main Avenue)

Another stop on Main, next to the Strater Hotel is The Office Spiritorium. With cozy surroundings and a fireplace you’ll feel more like you’re in a library or law office, not so much a bar. Happy Hour runs from 4 to 6pm with drink specials like a $3.75 Cosmo and half priced appetizers from pot stickers to potato skins. Stay till 7 for live music. (699 Main Avenue)

Scoot over a block from Main Avenue to Eno, a classy little coffee, wine, cocktail, and tapas bar (with a little Colorado brew as well). Their wine by the glass list changes, but always offers up quality fine wines. Sample three reds or three whites for $10 to $12. Tapas range from Colorado artisan cheese plates to smoked trout. Sit back, stay a while, and relax, open 8am for breakfast-10pm. (723 E Second Avenue)

If you’re up at Durango Mountain Resort then opt for a drink and snack from Purgy’s, open from 2-9. The bartender’s specially made Sangria filled with strawberries is to die for, but they mix a pretty good drink of any kind and serve lots of Colorado craft beers. The crispy sweet potato fries are mouthwatering and the chicken lollipops, finger-licking good! DMR also has The Bear Bar, a casual outdoor bar open from 11-2.

Relax and enjoy Durango, Colorado!
