Happy First Day of Spring! I don’t know about any of you, but I have been counting down the seconds until winter hibernates again since about January 1. I am of the firm belief that winter should exist for holiday time, and holiday time alone. Bring on January and a new season. Alas, it doesn’t work that way in Virginia and therefore we deal with Mother Nature’s sense of humor for more weeks than I’d like.
But we’re finally here, in Spring, and it’s time for rebirth. Green grass replaces the crunchy brown stuff posing in the lawn. Flowers litter street corners rather than dirty piles of snow. And it seems people will do whatever possible to spend just a few extra minutes outside.
That’s right. It’s time again to get off the couch and get the kiddos outside! Run, play, jump, what-have-you, just burn some energy and appreciate the weather before we get another snow storm. In March. You’re hilarious, Mother Nature.
How do I get little Janie off the couch, you may ask? Excellent question! Try one of these:
- Join a team. Soccer, baseball, tennis, girl/boy scouts, whatever might peak your kid’s interest. Emphasizing an active routine at a young age helps establish that as an important aspect of their lifestyle as they grow.
- Time to do some planting and lay out fertilizer? Get the kids involved. Who doesn’t like getting dirty more than a child? Grab some hand-held shovels and have them go at the flower pots that are now sprouting the latest variety of grass.
- Take a family walk. Or a run, if that’s your cup of tea. Getting the family involved makes it seem more of an activity rather than a chore. Some children don’t respect the idea of physical activity as more than a punishment so treating it as a something special can get them more excited in the future.
Now, go grab the family and enjoy the weather while we have it! You never know when the heat waves are gonna hit. Or those April Showers.
