We have gradually gotten to know the gang on Happy Endings over the last three years, but they still manage to find ways to surprise us with character quirks and clever antics, and the newest one? Max (Adam Pally) is a prank master. Who knew?
Apparently, Max plays pranks on his friends all of the time, and in "The Marry Prankster," they-- well, mostly Dave (Zachary Knighton)-- finally think it's time to get him back. And they have what they think is the perfect way to do so, too: buy him a lottery ticket with last week's numbers and show him the DVRed last week's results to make him think he's no longer the poor one. Why wouldn't he just look up the winning numbers online, you might ask? Don't worry, they thought of that...
What they might not have expected, though, was just how violent Max would get when he thought he had money coming to him. A combination of telling off everyone, including new, nice guy Pete (Nick Zano) and then planning his revenge (which really just feels like a long time coming since he so happily drops references to Emily Thorne whenever he can) when he learned it was all fake anyway makes "The Marry Prankster" one very special episode for Max.
But while he is prepping things on the forefront, Brad (Damon Wayans Jr.) is trying to land a new job, and two other characters have longer-running plans going on in the background. And yes, that leads to Penny's (Casey Wilson) engagement.
Without spoiling too much, here are some of our favorite funny moments for you to look forward to in "The Marry Prankster":
- ALEX'S OVER-REACTION TO, WELL, EVERYTHING. From the Home Alone style hands-on-the-face screaming, to her misspoken analogies like being "prawns" instead of "pawns," to lines like "I haven't slept a wink; I've picked up and quite smoking four times, and I'm drinking way too much Rockstar for someone my height!" this episode showcases Elisha Cuthbert's penchant for comedy better (and in a couple of brand new ways) than any before it.
- BRAD GETTING HIS KID FIX AS "CHIEF FUN OFFICER." First of all, if that title really exists, we want to find a job that will allow us to put that on a business card. Second of all, it's so nice to see how far he's come from the guy who gagged down a pre-pregnancy cleanse in the pilot episode. He and Jane (Eliza Coupe) decided against having kids because they'd be the only ones of their friends to do so, and they didn't want to give up their fancy city life, but that doesn't mean their interest in kids magically dissolved. Now Brad is able to let out his own inner big kid and get paid to do so, while still going up to that fancy apartment and being able to do dirty things with his wife right there in the living room (you'll see what we mean in the episode). It's the best of both worlds.
- PENNY LOOKS GOOD IN GREEN. Though when Max says those exact words to Penny (Casey Wilson) in the episode, it's in response to having just slimed her, it's actually very true. She spends the rest of the episode in green-hued clothing, and when the majority of the neon coloring has been dabbed out to only leave behind a mint-colored slime stain, well, it's like a soft pastel, and it's unconventional but kind of great all the same.
- DAVE ADMITS TO A KERRI STRUG CRUSH-- WHILE WEARING HER HAIRCUT. There's nothing else to this, other than the fact that we couldn't help but chuckle at the visual comparison. Is it just us? You'll have to tune in and let us know if you see it...
- FUN WITH PAINTBALL-- AND POPCORN. Look, no one has appropriated paintball better than Community, but Max's utilization of a rigged paintball gun for one of his pranks is a very close second. And fun fact: the key popcorn prank that Dave attempts to pull on Max is so creative and clever we want to try it for ourselves-- and also eerily similar to one in the Community season premiere. Great minds think alike!
Happy Endings airs on ABC on Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. "The Marry Prankster" airs on January 29th 2013, followed by a second all-new episode.
