Happy birthday to the Traveling Wilburys!

On Oct. 18, 1988, a group of musicians released their first album as the Traveling Wilburys. Not just any musicians, but famous names like Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty.

It was an interesting alliance and was much more than a vanity project. The result was a great album, "Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1," led off by "Handle With Care," a fantastic song sung by George Harrison. It was originally planned as a B-side for Harrison's song "This Is Love," but Warner Bros. Mo Ostin says he urged Harrison to make an album out of it.

From small things big things come. And so the legend of Lucky, Otis, Charlie T. Jnr., Lefty and Nelson was born and became an album that Rolling Stone called one of the 100 best albums of all time.

I remember LOVING the album, and then being utterly shocked when Christgau didn't like it. Hey, man, Terence Trent D'Arby didn't have the last word in '88!

One of the best releases by an ex-Fab.
