In what would have been his 94th year on this earth, today we celebrate the birthday of the trailblazing Jackie Robinson. January 31st also marks the final day before the month that America pays respect to the influence that African-Americans have had on U.S. and global history. So, how fitting is it that #42 was to be born on this day. In order to fully exalt Mr. Robinson, we must understand the obstacles that he had to overcome every day of his life, both on and off the baseball field. Death threats, verbal harassment and degradation is something that he faced, along with the normality of prejudice and segregation; which plagued American culture in the 1940's.
Later on this year, April to be exact, a biopic on Jackie Robinson is slated for release as a major motion picture. The movie is aptly titled '42: The Story of a True American Legend' for the number he wore, of course. Hopefully, the Warner Bros./Legendary produced film will shed positive light on the man, as well as his impact on the game, and the culture of the United States. It stars Chadwick Boseman, and Harrison Ford, along with a solid supporting cast; so we all should show support when the movie finally sees the light of day.
I would like to wish the late, great, Jack Roosevelt Robinson a happy birthday; may he rest in peace. His legacy will continue to live on and his example gives us all hope that anything is possible. April 15, 1947 wasn't that long ago; it's just proof that we've made glorious leaps towards equality, but the true goal has yet to be reached. If you haven't already, check out the video link for the '42' movie trailer. Now, make sure you spend the birthday of Jackie Robinson the correct way, and be productive... So to all: Be safe, and God speed.
