Happy birthday, Farrah … we miss you

She was born on February 2, 1947 in Corpus Christi, Texas. She grew up to be unforgettable: Farrah Fawcett – Majors.

The baby from Texas became the woman on the poster – THAT poster. Funny she initially dreamed of being a nurse or a nun. Instead she was an actress, a model, and an icon. She was also a talented artist, coauthoring a book and publicly showing her work, some of it featured in her films.

She did not understand the hype and, when asked, admitted with honesty she did not think of herself as beautiful. She had a delicate aura but a tough girl exterior. The type of girl that could hold her own at any dinner conversation, could wear that little black dress, kick your ass on the tennis court, or go duck hunting in the freezing morning dew. That was the allure. Breathtakingly pretty, but like us in a lot of ways. She made mistakes. And, like us, she could get cancer. We watched and hurt with her. She made it known we had to find a cure. When she cried, we cried.

Today Farrah would have celebrated birthday number 65. A quite time with a few close friends, probably. Homemade cake, champagne in delicate glasses, a lot of laughter, a toast.  Instead, that smile that graced every magazine in the nation, and the face internationally known, is gone. Lost to an ugly disease.

She bravely showed the world cancer is not a pretty pink ribbon. Fans loved her even more for her honesty. Her death was knocked to the back page almost as if it did not happen, as if it did not matter. But she was the real hero, the true star.

Farrah, your fans miss you. Happy birthday, wherever you are. A toast to the baby from Texas who grew up to be a Hollywood star.
