Happy birthday, Buffy: The Slayer turns 31 today

On this day, in the fictional world of the Buffyverse, a hero was born. Today Buffy Ann Summers, aka The Chosen One, aka Buffy the Vampire Slayer, aka She Who Slays, would turn 31 years awesome (If she even lived this long. Slayers have notoriously short life spans).

Happy birthday, Buffy, from the Whedonites of the world.

Buffy Summers, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar in Joss Whedon's seven-season-long TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was the one girl in all the world imbued with the power to fight the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness. On top of all that, this petite blonde with a penchant for pithy one-liners was saddled with the mantle of being a role model for millions of girls the world over (present company included). BTVS was arguably Whedon's most influential project to date.

Buffy's birthday is up for debate. In season one a shot of her school records put her birthday as October 24th. However, the episodes in which Buffy's birthday was celebrated always put the date of her birth around mid-January. The January birth date seemed to be confirmed by Buffy's admission in episode 4.11, "Doomed", that she is a Capricorn on the cusp of Aquarius.

And now you understand more about the Buffy birthday controversy than you ever wanted to know.

The point is, today we celebrate the 31st birthday of one of the toughest women in the history of TV. And I'm sure that somewhere Ms. Summers is feeling thankful in her stylish-yet-affordable boots.

Can’t stop the signal: Wish your favorite Slayer a happy birthday in a comment below! Unless you prefer Kendra, Faith, or Nickie... in which case you should probably hold off on the birthday wishes.
