On this day in 1976, a star was born. And that star was none other than Amy Acker. Whether you know her as Winifred Burkle, Illyria the hell goddess, Dr. Saunders, or Whiskey the broken Doll, this Whedonverse alumna turns thirty-five years awesome today.
Happy birthday Amy Acker from the Whedonites of the world!
Whedonites first came to know and love Acker for her work on Joss Whedon's Angel as the adorably nerdy Winifred "Fred" Burkle, a brilliant young scientist who got sucked into a Hell dimension, only to be rescued five years later by Angel and his team of do-gooders at the end of season two. After that, Fred became a valuable member of the team and beloved by all... until her untimely demise when her body was taken over by the all-powerful god Illyria. C'est la vie!
After Angel, Acker joined the cast of Joss Whedon's Dollhouse as Dr. Saunders, the mysteriously scarred and never-smiling head of the medical staff in the Dollhouse. Later on it was revealed that Dr. Saunders was herself a Doll, formerly known as Whiskey. Her Doll days ended when she was horribly scarred (though really, you'd have to work hard to ugly up a face like hers) by Alpha.
Acker's next Whedonverse project will be Much Ado About Nothing, in which she plays leading lady Beatrice to Alexis Denisof's Benedick. She also plays a role in The Cabin in the Woods, Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's mystery project. She is married to actor James Carpinello and they have two children.
