International Bacon Day is Saturday August 30. Since this yummy holiday honors all things bacon, there are countless ways to celebrate. Here are five ideas to get you started:
1. Begin your day with bacon cinnamon rolls! All you need is a can of refrigerated cinnamon rolls and some bacon. The best combo seems to be achieved using large/grand size rolls and two slices of bacon per roll.
Pan or oven cook the bacon until ¾ done and remove excess fat on paper towel lined plate
Open the can, unroll, add the strips of bacon, reroll each bun and bake according to package instructions.
Frost and eat the best darn cinnamon rolls ever!
2. Swipe on some Bacon Lip Balm before heading out for the day. Not only does it help heal dry and cracked lips you can taste bacon just by licking your lips.
3. Win over non-Brussels sprout eaters with the help of some bacon!
5 slice bacon, coarsely chopped
1 cup of Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved
1 medium shallot, finely chopped (can use an onion)
1 teaspoon of minced garlic
3/4 cup chicken or vegetable broth
Cook bacon, remove from the pan and cool on a paper towel.
Sauté shallots, garlic and Brussels sprouts in the bacon pan for 5 minutes
Pour broth into pan and bring to a boil
Reduce heat, add back in bacon and simmer until most of the liquid is gone and sprouts are tender ~ about 10 minutes
Salt and pepper to taste
5. Take your favorite pork product up a notch by making it into candied bacon. The results are addicting with quick and easy directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Line a cookie sheet with foil before placing the bacon in a single layer.
Cover bacon strips with brown sugar.
Bake for 15 minutes, turn bacon and sprinkle other side with brown sugar. Cook until crispy, another 10-15 minutes. (Entire cooking time 20-30 minutes)
Cool bacon on a wire rack.
Candied bacon can be eaten as a treat or added on top of frostings and ice cream. It is the perfect addition to chocolate chip cookies, muffins, brownies, donuts or cupcake batters.
