Today would have been Paul Newman’s 86th birthday. Paul Newman is a movie icon and in later life he was a salad icon which he reported saying "The embarrassing thing is that my salad dressing is out-grossing my films."
For his birthday let’s look back at five of his films.
1. The Silver Chalice (1954)
The Silver Chalice is Paul Newman’s first feature film and he played the character Basil. The plot is about a Greek artisan who is commissioned to sculpt a cup with Jesus and his disciples on it. It’s not Newman’s best film but while the plot isn’t great the color cinematography makes you forget about it. The film was based on Thomas B. Costain’s bestseller with the same name.
2. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958)
Newman plays Brick, an alcoholic who drinks his life away and has issues with his wife while all this is happening he is visiting his father who is dying. Newman and Elizabeth Taylor sizzled in this film.
3. The Long, Hot Summer (1958)
Accused barn burner and bum Ben Quick (Newman) goes to a small Mississippi town and there he hangs around with the richest family in the town, the Varners. The head of family likes him and even thinks that Quick should marry his school teacher daughter (Joanne Woodward). A little trivia this film marks Woodward’s and Newman’s first movie together.
4. Hud (1963)
A modern day western about ruthless Hud Bannon (Newman) and how he and his stern father clash. Hud is a jerk, he’s a villain but yet many admire him. Patricia Neal and Melvyn Douglas also starred in this picture.
On a personal note this is my father classic favorite film and that may had helped this film on the list. Anyway Cool Hand Luke is about a prisoner who doesn’t take authority. He keeps escaping and the officers want to break him. On this list this particular film has to be Newman’s best.
Those are five exceptional films that Paul Newman starred in from his first to his best. For those who haven’t seen Newman’s films I advise them to, he’s one of the greatest actors of all time. So rent them from your local video store or Netflix also if you would like to purchase these films just click on the name and you will be taken to Amazon.
