On February 1, 1887, southern California real estate developer Harvey Wilcox registered a name for his new community with the Los Angeles County recorder’s office, and the existence of “Hollywood” became official. Reportedly, the name had been suggested by his wife, Daeida, who was intrigued by a woman on a train who had used it to refer to a summer home.
The rest, as they say, is history.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has several events planned today in the Hollywood & Highland courtyard, kicking off with a 9:30 a.m. press conference. Later in the same location, a “mixer” scheduled from 4-7:00 p.m. promises entertainment, a champagne toast and a cake prepared by Food Network chef Duff Goldman (of Charm City Cakes).
The planned festivities are said to also include “flash mob” celebrations orchestrated by Flash Mob America in partnership with “an undisclosed organization.” They are expected to “surprise unsuspecting Angelinos with a number of strategically timed flash mobs” when “hundreds of flash mobbers will arrive at a secret location, burst into choreographed dance, surprise and delight onlookers, and then quickly disperse following the dance numbers.”
If this occurs, there's bound to be video made available online, so stay tuned for “film at 11,” as they say. (Please feel free to share your own Hollywood 125th Birthday flash mob video links in the Comments to this article.)
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce successfully promotes the city as a popular Los Angeles tourist attraction and maintains the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame and Hollywood Sign.
Happy 125th Birthday, Hollywood, and many happy returns!
