Happy 100th to Jack's Oyster House

Jack's Oyster House, an Albany dining fixture, turns 100 this week, and maintains its record of having closed only one day during that period -- for the 1986 funeral of founder Jack Rosenstein.

Jack was succeeded by son Arnold, who in turn was succeeded by son Brad, the current proprietor of the downtown icon. A fourth generation Rosenstein, Brad's 17-year-old son Jack, is working at the restaurant as well.

Situated as it is at the foot of the State Street hill east of the Capitol, Jack's has been the scene of thousands of political deals, celebrations and post-election wakes over the years. It also has been host to a pantheon of show biz celebrities too numerous to mention.

While the physical footprint of the restaurant has expanded and been slightly remodeled in the past year and a half, and Larry Schepici installed as executive chef, the atmosphere and much of the menu maintain the tradition that has been such a part of its success.
