'Hansel & Gretel' bewitches weekend box office

The critically panned horror fantasy ‘Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters’ cast its spell over the weekend box office, earning nearly $20 million to open at No. 1, according to industry figures released Monday.

Horror thriller ‘Mama’ ($13M) dropped from the top to No. 2 in its second week.

Oscar contenders ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ ($9.7M) and ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ ($9.4M) each slipped one to finish third and fourth.

The Jason Statham-Jennifer Lopez action film ‘Parker’ ($7M) debuted in fifth.

Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’ ($4.9M) inched up one spot to No. 6 in its fifth week.

The worst reviewed film of 2013, farcical comedy ‘Movie 43’ ($4.8M), opened in seventh.

Mob movie ‘Gangster Squad’ ($4.2M) fell four notches to No. 8 in its third week.

Musical ‘Les Miserables’ ($4.2M) eased down one note to ninth in its fifth week.

Mark Wahlberg-Russell Crowe crime thriller ‘Broken City’ ($4M) plunged five spots in its second week to round out the top 10.
