'Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters' slay weekend box office (Video)

In a weekend full of guilty pleasure releases, Box Office Mojo reported on Jan. 27 that "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" won the lackluster weekend. The movie, starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, brought in a low $19 million opening weekend to win the box office crown.

Overall, the fairy tale action movie has made $54.8 million worldwide, which means it has already eclipsed its $50 million production budget. The opening weekend is bigger than similar movies like "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" and "The Brothers Grimm," and the movie by Tommy Wirkola should end up being a minor success.

Two movies that fell short of that mark was the new Jason Statham action flick "Parker" and the new sketch comedy movie "Movie 43."

"Parker" finished in fifth place with a $7 million opening weekend, making it look like Statham's theatrical action career might be winding down. As one of the last holdovers of the action genre, this might start to mark the end of the once popular genre. This movie joins last year's "Safe" and 2009's "Crank: High Voltage" as recent box office failures.

"Movie 43" was even worse, opening in seventh place to horrible reviews. Despite its all star case, including Kate Winslet, Hugh Jackman, Richard Gere, Emma Stone and more, it only made $5 million, which is lower than even poorly made spoof movies, such as "Disaster Movie." Luckily for the producers, the movie only cost $6 million to make, and they have already made that back based on foreign sales.

  1. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters - $19M
  2. Mama - $12.9M
  3. Silver Linings Playbook - $10M
  4. Zero Dark Thirty - $9.8M
  5. Parker - $7M
  6. Django Unchained - $5M
  7. Movie 43 - $5M
  8. Gangster Squad - $4.2M
  9. Broken City - $4M
  10. Les Misérables - $3.91M
