Hank Chien wins Donkey Kong playoff; Steve Wiebe places second

The dust has settled and the smoke has cleared at Richie Knucklez Arcade Games.

The New Jersey classic arcade played host to the first-ever Kong-Off on Saturday, March 19 and Sunday March 20, a multi-player event featuring some of the top Donkey Kong players in the world in a chase for the highest score.

Current Donkey Kong World Record holder Hank Chien won first place in the event with a 994,400 point kill screen run done on Sunday afternoon.  It was the second time Chien took the first place position during the event.

Multiple-time former Donkey Kong champ Steve Wiebe came in at second place with a score of 986,400 points.  After finishing in in eighth place on Saturday, the King of Kong star pulled into first place for a short time on Sunday afternoon.

Rhode Island contender Eric Howard stunned some onlookers by gaining the first official kill screen of the Kong-Off with a 941,800 point kill screen run in his first try on Saturday afternoon.  He lost his position to Chien a short time later on Saturday afternoon and finished third place in the event.

MAME Donkey Kong champion Dean Saglio wrapped up fourth place with a score of 912,900 points.

Vincent Lemay, the youngest competitor in the field at 20 years of age, took fifth place with a kill screen score of 851,900.

Chien won a $1,000 cash prize for his victory, which came just a little over a week after the official verification of his latest world record score of 1,090,400 points.  Chien is the subject of a short documentary film entitled Doctor Kong, which will be screened at next weekend's Midwest Gaming Classic in Milwaukee, WI.
