Handwork that helps Haiti

haiti mat
Elizabeth Barr

Bitsy Barr, educator and missionary, will teach about the current situation in Haiti, where people are still recovering from the typhoon. Many families are still living in substandard situations, including sleeping on dirt floors. Ms. Bitsy will teach how to use plastic grocery bags that we would otherwise throw away or send to a landfill and instead transform them through the magic of simple crochet into comfortable and decorative mats for families to sleep on. All supplies will be provided, but participants are requested to bring as many plastic grocery bags with them as they possibly can, because it takes about 700 bags to make one mat. Bags should be clean and dry.
