L.I.F.T. Aviation Day in Longmont

An update to the below story: Jamie learned a few days after this event that she had been appointed to the United States Air Force Academy. Her nomination came from Vice President Biden and only 3/7000 students in the entire country got one.

Silver Creek High School student Jamie Kirkland was first introduced to aviation after attending an air show at the Longmont Vance Brand Airport in 2009. Shortly after attending the air show, she got involved with the Antique Airplane Association of Colorado. Since that time, the members of the AAACO helped her learn how to build airplanes, inspired her to get her private pilot license and encouraged her to pursue a career in aviation.

Because aviation had become such a big part of her life and after developing her leadership skills for the first three years in the Silver Creek Leadership Academy, she decided to apply what she had learned in aviation and will present her Senior Capstone Project (which is a project that challenges high school seniors to demonstrate their academic knowledge, experiences and observations) as a free aviation open house for the community at an event called L.I.F.T. Off Aviation Day. More details about the event can be found on the website she created at:

When: Saturday April 26, 2014
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Where: Silver Creek High School
4901 Nelson Road, Longmont, CO 80503

L.I.F.T. stands for Learning and Investigating Flight Technologies and L.I.F.T. Off Aviation Day is an event where people of all ages can experience aviation in a highly interactive way. The open house format will enable people to come and go and move from station to station as they please. Aviation groups from around Colorado will have displays and representatives from each group will be there provide information and answer questions. Groups will also have an activity or demonstration that will allow visitors to get involved. There will also be drawings for items donated by Longmont Airport businesses.

According to Jamie, "I chose to create L.I.F.T. Off Aviation day for my Senior Capstone Project for the Silver Creek Leadership Academy because I am passionate about aviation and am committed to inspiring and cultivating the next generation of aviators. I have learned that aviation is a field filled with outstanding opportunities, however, many people perceive it as unreachable. I want to introduce as many people as possible to the aviation community that I have come to know. It is my hope that visitors will leave my event with an understanding that they can actually build, repair, and fly the airplanes that they see overhead."
