Karen Wilson, the owner of Sweet Sisters Bodycare, says she was interested in herbal products from the time she was four years old. Her favorite “toys” included her perfume and chemistry sets. It would be many years before she would return to her love of creating sweet smelling potions made of ingredients from nature. During those years she got a masters degree in developmental psychology and a teaching credential, moved to Whidbey Island, and worked as a teacher at the Waldorf School before getting married, having three children and becoming a full-time homeschooling mom.
When Karen’s daughters Rohanna and Terra were 10 and 7 respectively, they both wanted horses of their own. Karen told them that they would need to earn half the money to support their horseback riding. The girls earned money selling bookmarks, catnip felted toys and simple creams and soaps made with their mom at the Bayview Farmers Market. Within three years the girls had saved enough money to cover half the price of the horses, their board and other expenses.
Working with her daughters, Karen became more and more involved in creating her line of body care products. In 2007, she had expanded her product line enough to create Sweet Sisters and become a regular vendor at the Bayview Farmers Market as well other local markets and festivals. Today, Sweet Sisters products can also be found in select hair salons, spas and B&Bs. Her newest additions include The Yoga Lodge in Greenbank and Inspired Arts in Freeland.
The Sweet Sisters line today includes approximately 50 products. Karen says her biggest sellers are hair and skin care products, including shampoos, conditioners, serums and moisturizers
Karen feels that there is definitely something different about her hand crafted body care line: “They are superior to mass-produced corporate products.” And, she comments, “With these body products, all my good intentions and passion in addition to the highest quality natural ingredients get passed on to my customers.”
In addition to the sweet sisters, the family includes Terra’s twin brother, Leif, and Karen’s partner of 22 years, Wade Wilcox of Earth Rhythms Landscaping.
The Sweet Sisters website includes ingredients and instructions for every product sold. Karen is also available to consult about her products via email (firstname.lastname@example.org). All of the Sweet Sisters products can be ordered through the website.
