Although the Lions of Armstrong Fundamental Elementary School (Hampton), stand proudly, they are quite obviously not too proud to offer thanks. This is exactly what they did, from top to bottom, as school principal, Linda Hunt Byrd, joined with teachers and students, volunteers and other staff members to welcome family veterans to a special lunch for Veteran's Day, Wednesday, Nov.11.

Active duty and retired veteran parents and grandparents joined the students of Armstrong for their choice of Nacho Chili and Cheese, Turkey Sandwich, or Chicken Caesar Salad plus two side choices.

The delighted students, whether or not they could lay claim to a personal family veteran, pitched in wholeheartedly to honor their guests. Although a few were shyly tongue-tied at first, their desire to show appreciation quickly overcame their fear as they approached veterans unknown to them with smiles, handfuls of their own hand-crafted cards and verbal 'Thank-you's".

The students were not alone in their giving, either, as Mrs. Byrd was right there in the midst of all the excitement, offering her own smiles, hand shakes, kind words and of course, "Thank-you's".

Hampton's Armstrong Elementary is the little school that packs a big punch in the Wythe area of Hampton. As a Fundamental school, Armstrong requires a certain amount of parental participation and promotes strong study skills in an orderly, well-disciplined environment. Their methods seem to make a world of difference in regard to student progress...Armstrong has justly stood as a top-of-the-list, state-wide achiever in SAT scoring, has been fully accredited since 1998, and earned Gov. Kaine's VIP Award for Educational Excellence.  To add blessing to blessing, Armstrong's 2008-'09 Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Sandi Dianna, was also recognized as the 2008-'09 Hampton City Schools Elementary Teacher of the Year.

Isn't it nice to get a little good news for a change?

Somebody really is doing it right.

Thank you, Armstrong. Your gestures of appreciation made many Veterans in the Wythe corner of Hampton Roads feel, well...much appreciated.
