School systems took no chances – making the decision to close schools Sunday evening rather than risk having buses on the road in the midst of adverse weather conditions. While many Suffolk parents may question the decision due to the sleet not beginning until about 10:00 a.m. in the northern section of the city, road conditions quickly deteriorated thereafter. Ultimately, school officials have to make their decisions on the side of safety.

After experiencing a spring-like 73ᵒF Sunday, temperatures dropped into the 20s on Monday. The temperature dropped as rain moved into the area. The rain transitioned into sleet and then into snow as morning moved into the afternoon, but not before a layer of sleet was left on the ground.

Residents in the Hampton Roads area are expected to see between 2 – 5 inches of snow and sleet on Monday. The National Weather Service is predicting hazardous road conditions through Wednesday.

“Once the sleet starts to fall, you might have issues on the roads,” said Dan Proch, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wakefield. “Sleet tends to stick to the roadways much quicker than snow. It can cause some pretty hazardous conditions after it starts to fall.”

"It's going to be near record lows in this area for this time of year," said Larry Brown, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wakefield. "Regardless of where you are it's going to be pretty nasty."

Many schools in the area have already been closed for Tuesday, and may also have to remain closed on Wednesday due to road conditions. Make-up days are mounting, but are part of what must be dealt with in these situations.

Be safe out there!
