Hamlet: The video game?

The first indie game based on Shakespeare's "Hamlet." Really.

Since early 2009, a Russian game developer known as mif2000 has been quietly toiling away on a colorful new indie game called "Gamelet" but later renamed to (clears throat):

HAMLET or Last Game Without MMORPG Elements, Shaders and Product Placements.

Yep, really! More interesting than the snarky title (here's one that tops it), however, is the fact that it's actually an adventure game based on Shakespeare's Hamlet.

We're quite enthralled with the developer's focus on logic puzzles, quirky character art, unconventional storytelling and even boss fights in - it bears repeating - a game based on Hamlet!

Here are some other interesting facts we managed to unearth by skimming the developer's blog.

  • Prince Hamlet is not the main character
  • Rosencratz and Guildenstern will make an appearance
  • There is no inventory system in the game
  • mif2000 defines Hamlet as an indie, puzzle, adventure game & twisted tale
  • There will be a heavy concentration of logic-based puzzles

We're not sure if the game will be free to play or not, but the release date is April 8th, 2010 and should be available for PC. If you want to ask the enigmatic developer questions directly, follow him on Twitter here
