Hamilton files for bankruptcy

Former NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Bobby Hamilton Jr. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in his home state of Tennessee.

According to court papers, Hamilton has assets of $551,825 and liabilities that total nearly $1.3 million. Most of those liabilities are for property mortgages or loans. That property includes Highland Rim Speedway north of Nashville.

Hamilton also lists a $198,000 debt to the IRS for 2005 taxes.

Hamilton made 253 starts in the Nationwide Series throughout his career. Those races include five wins. He last competed in the series full-time in 2008. He raced in nine Nationwide events in 2009.

Hamilton also raced at the Sprint Cup level, competing in 64 events and racing full-time in that series in 2005.

Hamilton raced sparingly in the Camping World Truck Series in 2010 and 2011. He competed in six truck races in 2010 and one last year.
