Hamilton County celebrates National Public Gardens Day

HAMILTON COUNTY - With National Public Gardens Day coming up on May 11, many Hamilton County residents may wonder what events are taking place in their area.

Hamilton County houses a Hamilton County Master Gardener Association that provides all types of information, such as:

  • Volunteer information
  • Membership information
  • Scholarship & grant information
  • Upcoming events
  • Committees
  • Assistance with personal gardening

In addition, Hamilton County offers beautiful locations to local gardens that are open to the public.

Coxhall Gardens, for instance, is just one location that not only offers the natural beauty of an arboretum, children's garden and other gardens, but the opportunity to relax and listen to music in an outdoor setting at the music pavilion. The park also features a playground, bicycle trails, fishing and a paved trail. Located just off Towne Road and 116th, the gardens are on the west side of Carmel, just east of the Zionsville border.

The reason for National Public Gardens Day, which is created by a non-profit agency known as the American Public Gardens Association (APGA) is to help raise awareness of the public gardens all over America and the role they play in promoting more awareness of the environment, including water and plant conservation so they can educate communities all over the nation.

Gardens are also wonderful ideas to help with Mother's Day. Conner Prairie in Noblesville offers a chance for families to make Mother's Day more memorable by providing their annual Mother's Day plant sale where they sell varieties of flowers, herbs and vegetables. In addition, this year they are also offering peppers (even the Bhut Jolokia - the world's hottest pepper). The proceeds go to feeding the hungry in Hamilton County.

The Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) gardens and grounds is celebrating National Public Gardens Day by inviting guests to "plant" themselves at the IMA greenhouse parking where they will receive a fresh bundle of lettuce, which is grown right at the IMA, including a seed packet to allow guests to begin their own gardens. They can then follow along on a guided tour through the gardens of the 100-acre Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park while discussing ideas with some of the IMA horticulturalists. On this day, shoppers will receive a 20% discount at the IMA Greenhouse Shop. The IMA hours are from dawn to dusk.
