Hamelin wins 1500m world championship in Quebec

According to the Canadian Press, Charles Hamelin won the gold medal on Friday in the men's 1500m at the 2014 World Short Track Speed Skating Championship in Montreal, Quebec.

Hamelin, who hails from Levis, Quebec, also won the gold medal in the men's 1500m at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

This was Hamelin's ninth world championship victory of his outstanding short track speed skating career, but only his first in the men's 1500m.

Hamelin posted a time of 2:15.049 followed by silver medalist Tianyu Han of China with a time of 2:15.138 and bronze medalist Seyeong Park of South Korea with a time of 2:15.262. Han also finished second place to Hamelin at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

In the women's 1500m, it was a South Korean sweep of the podium, with Shim Suk Lee winning gold, Kim A-Lang winning silver and Seung-Hi Park winning bronze.

Saturday's competitions will be seen live on CBC at 3:00 p.m. mountain time.
