When a succulent slice of ham is cooked in a combination of orange juice and honey, you know it is going to be fabulous! This honey glazed ham recipe is made wonderful by the inclusion of orange, cinnamon, and cloves. The result is a juicy and delicious ham that has just the right amount of sweet and just the right amount of spice. Nothing overpowers the ham, so you can thoroughly enjoy it.
Ham is one of those meats that you want to have left over after the main meal. There are so many ways to enjoy it. From the ubiquitous ham sandwich (and even that can be made so many different ways) to ham and cheese quiche to ham and cheesy potatoes and so on and on . . . The list of dishes you can make with leftover ham are absolutely endless. A large ham baked on Sunday can literally last you throughout the week and into the next without repeating a meal.
Unless you’re familiar with ham, it’s hard to know what kind to buy. There are so many types (fully cooked, bone-in, boneless, spiral cut, smoked, etc.), it makes the process of buying one a bit confusing. Although there are many sites on the internet that offer advice on each type of ham, the United States Department of Agriculture is a great place to start. This is the governmental agency that oversees any type of packaged food production and sales – a good source of information when in doubt of what to buy. Basically, ham is the cured leg of pork – if it’s not cured, it’s not really ham. Curing means either soaking or injecting the pork with a solution that contains salt and usually other ingredients as well. This makes ham high in sodium. So though you shouldn’t eat it every day of your life, remember it’s a source of protein as well and is delicious.
Honey Glazed Ham Recipe
Ingredients for Honey Glazed Ham:
- Fully cooked whole ham
- 1 ½ cup honey
- Juice of ½ orange
- 1 tsp. orange zest
- ½ tsp. cinnamon
- ¼ tsp. cloves
- ½ tsp. almond extract
Directions for Honey Glazed Ham:
Mix together the honey, juice of ½ orange, orange zest, cinnamon, cloves, and almond extract. Let sit for 20 minutes prior to using.
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Place the ham in a roasting pan or shallow baking pan. With a sharp knife, cut shallow slits in the surface of the ham in a diamond pattern. Baste the ham with the honey mixture and bake uncovered for 1 hour. Baste ham again and bake until the internal temperature of the ham reaches 140 degrees on a meat thermometer. Keep basting the ham every 20 – 25 minutes. Five minutes prior to removing the ham from the oven, baste the final time. (Read the package label to determine the reheating time for the weight of the ham – should be about 15 – 18 minutes per pound.)
Once the internal temperature of 140 degrees has been reached, remove the ham from the oven and let it sit for 15 – 20 minutes prior to slicing. Serve garnished with orange slices.
