Halos decline Haren option after trade prospects fall apart.

Dan Haren's days an an Angel are likely over, though not in the way anyone expected them to end.

Hours after a trade with the Chicago Cubs fell apart, the Halos declined to pick up Haren's $15.5 million option for 2013, instead exercising the $3.5 million buyout and making him a free agent.

Haren came to the Angels at the 2010 trade deadline in the deal that sent Patrick Corbin, Tyler Skaggs, and Joe Saunders to the Arizona Diamondbacks. In his two-plus seasons with the club, he compiled a 33-27 record with a 3.52 ERA and 409 strikeouts in 78 starts and one relief appearance.

However, the veteran righty struggled badly in 2012 while dealing with back issues, going 12-13 with a 4.33 ERA in just 176-2/3 innings, his lowest innings total since becoming a starter in the 2006 season.

The move comes hours after the club declined to make a qualifying offer to Torii Hunter and two days after shipping Ervin Santana to Kansas City.
