Halo 5: Guardians, the next game in 343 Industries' Reclaimer Saga was revealed by General Manager Bonnie Ross on Friday.Alongside a teaser image that shows a brand new character and returning series hero Master Chief John-117, some info was dropped in the press release and elsewhere. Here's a recap of the announcement.
First and foremost, Halo 5: Guardians will be running on a new Engine. All previous Halo games have run on Bungie's Halo Engine, and while 343 did wonders with the aging engine in Halo 4, with the new console it was time for an upgrade.
“Halo 5: Guardians is a bigger effort than Halo 4. That applies to the content and scope of the game, as well as the technology in what’s now a brand new and more powerful engine" Ross stated. Halo 5 is being built from "the ground up." To achieve "the scope, features and scale we’ve been dreaming of for more than a decade."
Ross states that Halo 5: Guardians is, "A game that will incorporate the things we learned from Halo 4 about technology, aesthetics, performance and scale – and perhaps more importantly, understanding and embracing a community of gamers who love what lies at the heart of this game, and the limitless potential of the Halo universe."
Observant Halo fans note that while Halo 5's release date was pushed to 2015, the original promise of a Halo game coming in 2014 was not. Ross stated that the tagline "Your Journey Begins in 2014 spoke about a “journey,” rather than a destination – and that journey definitely begins in 2014 with a giant leap, rather than one small step."
That sure sounds like a Halo 2 Anniversary hint. Combined with the recent rumor of "The Master Chef Collection, Halo's 1-4 re-mastered for XBox One, E3 2014 is going to be a big one for Halo fans. Referring to the event, Ross said, "We’re confident that Halo fans will be pretty excited about the special plans we have in store."
The as yet officially announced Master Chief Collection does not have a release date, though fans should expect it, or possibly just Halo 2 Anniversary sometime this fall/holiday season. Halo 5: Guardians will release sometime in 2015.
