A job listing was discovered Friday for a Halo franchise writer at 343 Industries. While it doesn't give any insight into Halo 5 on the Xbox One, it's an illuminating and somewhat hilarious look at the amount of knowledge and dedication that is needed to work on a game franchise that's gone back a dozen years.
"If you already know off the top of your head how much an Unggoy weighs [ed: Grunt], the maximum top speed of a Warthog, and how big a Halo ring is, you might be interested in being a part of the franchise team responsible for creating new Halo stories across an ever-growing collection of games, books, comics, and live action video," the job listing reads.
"To fit this position, you will need to physically manifest your passion for the Halo universe. We will gauge your Halo knowledge and if you prove worthy, you could have the chance to help curate and grow one of the most popular science fiction universes around."
So what are the qualifications for being a franchise writer? Aside from being able to write entertaining and accurate content, the qualified candidate will need to "Know and love the Halo universe to a degree that occasionally scares people."
In addition to a resume and applcation, 343 Industries is also asking prospective candidates to provide the following writing sample.
In 1000 words or less, create a comprehensive summary of the concept of “The Mantle” as it currently exists in game and expanded universe fiction. Include images/videos if and when appropriate. Anticipate that this document would be used by Halo creators at 343 Industries and external development/creative partners. (It won’t really be, but that’s your expected audience.)
Good luck to those that apply.
