Microsoft is planning on shutting down the online multiplayer option for “Halo 2” in February, Eddie Makuch reports for Gamespot on Jan. 17, 2013.
Support for PC multiplayer will end of February 15, 2013, 343 Industries announced on a blog post. The company has noted that the popularity has dwindled over time, with peak levels at about 20 players.
“Halo 2” multiplayer over LAN and the single-player mode will still be available, though all network multiplayer capabilities will be switched off.
“We love you, Halo 2 PC, and you will live forever in our hearts," the company said.
“Halo 2” launched in 2007 and became one of the highest-praised games on the Xbox 360 console. It was released nearly two and a half years after the original Xbox version. It was ported to the PC by Hired Gun, and internal Microsoft team that has since gone under. The game runs only on Windows Vista; players also holding out for an HD release are out of luck, since Microsoft has said it has no such plans for a re-release.
