2014 is here, and with it, the 10 year anniversary of Halo 2, which originally released on November 9th, 2004. But is it really happening? Let’s break down the facts.
Let’s begin with the most recent news. Steve Downs, voice actor of the Master Chief said in an interview;
“I think you may be ahead of yourself on Halo 5,” Downes said. “I wouldn’t expect anything until 2015. What you can look forward to this year is an anniversary edition of Halo 2.”
However, later on, after the rumor spread like wildfire, Steve Downs told IGN;
"I was just mentioning some of the things I had read online about Halo 2. I have no idea if there will be an anniversary edition and didn't mean to leave that impression."
So, it appears as though Steve Downs is in the dark regarding a possible Halo 2 anniversary after all. On February 3rd, a fan tweeted Microsoft’s Phil Spencer asking;
“I know you might be getting a lot of this, is Halo 2 anniversary even a reality? A grrrr or an angry retort would be enough...”
To which Mr. Spencer replied;
“@nixel_pixel Never get tired of questions on what's coming. Just can't always answer as we need news at events. Halo 2 is a good game...”
As always, Microsoft remains cryptic on the matter. They released a statement saying;
"Other than confirming that your Halo journey on Xbox One begins in 2014, we have made no announcements related to specific titles. Any report or listing to the contrary is based solely on speculation and rumor."
Ok Microsoft, fine, we’ll play your game. So, is Halo 2 Anniversary releasing this fall? There is one last bit of evidence that leans towards the answer being yes. At the New York Toy Fair this past weekend, McFarlane showed off a prototype of a Halo Xbox One Cloaked Master Chief, but what was perhaps more interesting, a new Halo 2 version of the Master Chief was also on display. If you recall, back before Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary released, there was a Master Chief toy made specifically for the Anniversary. Coincidence? Probably not. However, the presence of a toy doesn’t necessarily mean that it will accompany a game release.
One final thing to note is this; while Halo 2 is not confirmed, there is one thing known for sure, come fall 2014, we will either be under the deep
