Saturday, as people around the US search for information about Halloween: things to do, the history of Halloween, last minute costume ideas, pumpkin carving, and Halloween party information…the Wikipedia Halloween page has created an Internet buzz. Halloween is celebrated on Monday, October 31, 2011.
According to Wikipedia, the word Halloween can be traced back to its Swedish heritage in the 16th century and it translates into All Hallows Even (Eve), the night before All Saints Day on November 1.
Trick or treating is also a custom that many people around the world associate with Halloween and millions of people participate in. Children and adults dress up in Halloween costumes and visit house to house, saying “trick or treat” asking for candy. Today, the insinuation is that if the child doesn’t get a treat they will perform a trick on the property of the owner, but the original tradition was that the child would perform a trick, or sing, or tell a story to earn the treat.
