Halloween may have come and gone for most people; costumes are put away, spider webs are cleaned, all the candy is eaten except for those Necco wafers that nobody likes, and the candle inside your pumpkin has burned out. But don’t tell that to hard rockers, GWAR or their fans. They live Halloween all year round.
Prior to GWAR taking the stage, you could feel the anticipation of a great rock show. GWAR has a reputation for being one of the most theatrical and goriest shows around. Every fan that was lucky enough to be in the front row were all wearing white t-shirts in lieu of the bloodbath that was about to ensue. I asked one front-row fan who just happens to be attending her fifth GWAR show why she keeps coming back. “Because they put on the greatest show ever!”, she replied.
Taking the stage in elaborate costumes reminiscent of space monsters, they waste no time living up to their famed reputation. Fake blood was spewing everywhere, much to the fan’s delight. This is what they came to see, and GWAR delivered. Acting out a number of skits filled with gore, it’s clear that Halloween isn’t over just yet. They aren’t known for being the most musically inclined band, they don’t need to be. They are there to entertain their fans, and in that they were highly successful.
GWAR continues their tour in support of their newest album, Battle Maximus on Metal Blade Records. Be sure to check out their website for dates and cities. Their show is a blast to attend and it’s easy to see why fans keep coming back.
