Halloween has many eerie sides. Most are meant to get the adrenaline coursing through our bodies and take our breath away.
My Halloween “treat” when my mother died had all of those components and much more.
Here is a Halloween High 5 to a very GUTSY woman. I would also love you to send me stories of special times of synchronicity and synergy that you can share with me for a book I am writing about the magic of connections.
Question: What are the GUTSY ingredients for living life fully and letting go elegantly?
Answer: Learn from my Mother Reba.
Here is the back story.
My Mother was diagnosed with cancer when she was in her 70’s. Treatment could only do so much and soon it was clear she only had months to live. I was her companion through this complex and powerful journey. We helped each other as she got nearer and nearer to “the runway to heaven.”
One day I took a deep breath and asked her what it felt like to die (rarely do any of us talk this directly). We had gone to a posh restaurant for lunch and even though she did not have the appetite for food, she still had the appetite for beauty and ambiance.
She smiled, paused and responded “You know dear, deep down we all know that sooner or later we will be invited to this fabulous party in another world. I have just received my invitation and am getting ready to go.”
There was a contentment in her as well as amazing curiosity that kept us talking so honestly. We went deep, she was the leader as we discussed what really matters in life; living, loving, and learning. We talked about regrets. Of course there are always some in a life fully lived. We talked about her hopes and dreams, for me, my brother and all the grandchildren.
Three weeks went by and she was back in the hospital.
On Halloween eve my brother and I were at her side. Here is where the story gets eerie:
At 7:30 a voice in my head said “she won’t last past 8 o’clock.” It meant nothing to me. And yet…… as I watched my mother take her last breath a voice came over the public address system and said “It is now 8 0’clock and visiting hours are over.”
