Chicago Botanic Gardens has scared up family oriented activities for the two weekends before Halloween. The weekend of Oct. 19 features a dog parade on Sat. and tricks and treats at the Model Railroad Garden on Sat. and Sun. On the following weekend, Oct. 26-27, Hallowfest offers entertainment for the family. Chicago Botanic Gardens is located in the North Shore suburb of Glencoe, north of Chicago, Ill.
Spooky Pooch Parade is on Sat., Oct 19 (11 a.m.-1 p.m.). The parade is the one day of the year that dogs are permitted into the Chicago Botanic Gardens. Spooky Pet Parade a treat for dogs at Chicago Botanic Gardens (photos).
Trains, Tricks & Treats is on Sat.-Sun., Oct. 19 and 20 (10 a.m.-5 p.m.), weather permitting. Celebrate Halloween at the Model Railroad Garden, specially decorated with spooky spider-webs complete with spiders, scary ghosts and ghoulish goblins. The train runs through fall foliage and colorful pumpkins. Treats will be distributed throughout the Model Railroad Garden so kids can find the treats and take them home. Kids will be able to take part in a planting activity. Costumes are encouraged for visitors, so get into the mystical Halloween spirit. Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $4 for children ages 3-12. Children 2 and under are free. Members save $1 off each ticket. HallowFest is a celebration of Halloween on Sat.-Sun., Oct. 26-27. Chicago Botanic Garden’s HallowFest: A Garden of Good…and Evil has two paths, "friendly" or "spooky." Take either the "friendly" or "spooky" path to activities in the Regenstein Center and McGinley Pavilion. Experience family-friendly thrills and chills, including two stages of entertainment, an eerie amphibian show, carved pumpkin gallery and face painting. As night falls, walk through the Model Railroad Garden, a miniature train decorated in ghastly lights and running special ghost trains. Ride the magical Howlin' Express, a 15-minute ride around the Garden. Enjoy the brisk fall weather as you watch for animals lurking around the Garden!
Hallowfest hours: Sat. (6-9 p.m.) and Sun. (4-7 p.m.). Tickets, which can be purchased online, are $14 member/$19 nonmember if purchased before 10/15. Tickets (purchased on or after 10/26): $17 member/$22 nonmember. Children 2 and under are free. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
