Halloween canned food drive
SUNY Brockport student athletes will be collecting non-perishable food items on Halloween.
Canned fruit, stuffing mix, gravy, muffin mix, Jello, pudding, and roasting pans are needed for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
Student athletes will be going door to door in the village on Thursday, October 31, 2013 from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M.
The athletes will be handing out plastic donation bags for the next few days and then will make their way back around the community on Halloween to collect the bags to donate to the food shelf.
Donations will go to the Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf.
According to the Brockport Food Shelf website, their current needs include:* all kinds of pasta
- canned vegetables
- beans - all kinds
- chunky soups
Please note that the Food Shelf can no longer accept baby food or diapers.
The Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf is located in the basement of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at 14 State Street, Brockport, NY 14420.
The mission of the Food Shelf, which began in 1973, is to reduce hunger by providing food relief to residents of the Brockport, Sweden and Clarkson communities.
The Food Shelf is open on the first on the four Thursdays each month
A 1 or 2 person household receives 35 to 40 lbs. foods, intended to provide nutritious meals for 4 days. Larger amounts are distributed to larger households.
Shoppers choose their own foods guided by a list of specified quantities and categories:
for example 2 cans meats, 3 cans fruits, 4 cans vegetables, 2 grains (pasta, rice), 4 cans of soup, cereals, breads, and, when available, fresh produce.
Home deliveries can be arranged for homebound and mobility impaired persons.

The Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf is also sponsoring a Make a Difference Against Hunger 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, October 26, 2013
The race starts at 9 A.M.at the Special Events RecBrockportreation Center, or SERC, on the SUNY Brockport campus.
Registration for the race is from 7:30 to 8:45 A.M. on race day.
- $25 for all individual entries (After October 12)
- $15 college students and younger
- $50 family (1 or 2 adults, any number of children)
- Advance Registration closed October 15, 2013
