Rebecca Henry at Pink Pearl Studio classifies herself as an Assemblage/Textile Artist. "I've made a lot of children's clothing, both painted and sewn. I like putting found girly, vintage and fun objects together to create new and beautiful things." she says. Her love of combining materials led her to start Mod Podging Dr. Scholl's sandals to match famous Lilly and Vera prints. "Six years ago, I made over 100 pairs of shoes in one summer for several shops and eBay orders." As a wife and mother of three, Rebecca works to find a balance between her crafting career and her family. She is looking for her artistic "focus" but finds it difficult as she likes to work so with many different mediums. "I am completely burned out on shoes." she says but continues to create any time she can.
Getting ready for Halloween, Rebecca whipped up an adorable vintage style banner using paper, fabric trims and ribbon. To make your own banner, start by drawing a triangle/pennant shape on a 12 x 12 piece of scrapbooking paper. You'll then need to reinforce the paper with some cardstock by stacking it underneath. Rebecca then "rough sews" around the edges of the shape to help keep everything together. "Rough sew means to sew not too neat so it gives the pendant that shabby, old look. You don't have to be too careful. If you don't want to sew, just glue." says Rebecca.
Once your paper is sewn or glued cut out your shape and glue some trim about an inch from the top of the pennant. You can use ribbon or any other decorative trim that catches your fancy. Punch holes above the trim near the corners of the pennant. This is where you will string the individual pennants onto a ribbon for hanging.
Now it's time to embellish your pieces. This is where you can really get creative! "Typically, I use paper rosettes." says Rebecca. "Basically, to make a rosette, I cut two pieces of paper in 1 1/2" strips. Accordion fold each. Be NEAT and crease your edges well. With a little hot glue, glue the two ends and flatten [as shown on the pendant] and hot glue onto the pendant." Rebecca then adds vintage images and some glitter tinsel or glittered chip board letters she finds at craft stores. Vintage images can be found on line at places like Flickr. Try the Collage Images group or search for specifc subjects like Vintage Halloween. Rebecca added some jewelry wire and bells to the bottom of each pennant and strung them up on ribbon to complete her project.
