Halloween, the annual holiday rooted in the Gaelic festival of Samhain, is an endless source of inspiration for musicians and, for many, their favorite holiday of the year. This playlist focuses on the darker music of Halloween beginning with Danny Elfman’s mood-setting classic ‘This Is Halloween’ from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Next is an appropriate greeting from Alice Cooper followed by Echo & The Bunnymen’s 'The Killing Moon', now known to an entire generation as “that song from the opening of Donnie Darko”. Sinead O’Connor’s duet with Shane MacGowan on 'Haunted' is both beautiful and haunting at the same time. When mixed together properly, the next two songs fit perfectly. Concrete Blonde's 'Bloodletting' ends with the sounds of thunder and rain while Black Sabbath's self-titled song begins in the same manner.
The dark mix continues with a trio of great Halloween songs you can dance to: 'The Time Warp' from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, 'Goo Goo Muck' by The Cramps and the anthem of those who celebrated Halloween year-round, ‘Every Day Is Halloween‘ by Ministry. Self’s 'KiDdies' contains the great line, “let’s go trick or treating dressed up like Marilyn Manson” and no Halloween party is complete without the darkest of all Halloween songs, Bauhaus’ 'Bela Lugosi’s Dead'. Alice Cooper returns with 'The Black Widow' although the version contained here does not include the Vincent Price introduction from the end of the song 'Devil's Food'. Closing out the dark mix Halloween playlist is 'Lucretia My Reflection' by The Sisters Of Mercy and 'Dead Souls' by Joy Division which Nine Inch Nails famously covered for the movie The Crow.
