After looking amazing through her pregnancy, Halle Berry has delivered a baby boy, she and husband Olivier Martinez announced on October 6, 2013. Shortly after announcing her engagement to Martinez in March 2013 -- the couple married in July -- Berry discussed the news that she and Martinez were expecting. "This has been the biggest surprise of my life," the Academy Award-winning actress told Alina Cho of CNN while also announcing her involvement with the UN World Food Programme.
In April 2013, Berry joined CFDA lifetime achievement award-winner Michael Kors on CNN to discuss how important nutrition is to developing babies and everyone around the world. "Good nutrition [... during] the first 1,000 days is fundamental" to the baby's health, Berry said. Kors added, "This is a solvable problem. The food is there [...] You can change someone's life -- immediately." Kors and Berry's effort on behalf of the UN World Food Programme is called "Watch Hunger Stop," and they urge everyone to get involved by donating, especially on October 16, which has been observed as "World Food Day" since 1979.
On October 16, visitors to any of the six global Michael Kors stores can pick up a free "Watch Hunger Stop" t-shirt and have their images live-streamed to a billboard in Times Square. Anyone wishing to donate can visit WatchHungerStop.com (which accepts multiple payment methods, including PayPal) or any Michael Kors store. Five dollars will feed a child for one month; $25 will feed a child for a semester of school.
Berry's words are borne out by research: The International Journal of Epidemiology reports that undernutrition has its roots in the fetal period. Vitamin A deficiency and zinc deficiency can be remedied through improved maternal nutrition during pregnancy. In Midwifery Today, health professionals assert that "The quality of daily food intake is the most important and most ignored factor determining pregnancy outcomes [...] The placenta is continuously remodeled [...], giving women the ability to improve fetal nutrition during pregnancy." A donation to the World Food Programme -- or the purchase of a select Michael Kors watch -- can help women around the world accomplish this very important goal.
