Who wouldn't want Hal Sparks to help them ring in Halloween? The multi-talented actor, comedian and musician is one of the judges for The Hub's Halloween Bash costume contest, and he recently told BFTV what he enjoyed about the experience, as well as his own personal Halloween favorites.
"I've always been amazingly judgmental. Especially around the holidays and even more so when candy is involved," Hal quipped. "All kidding aside, I was glad to do it. I love Halloween - and not just because they named it after me."
The Lab Rats star joined home guru Martha Stewart and actress Coco Jones on the panel, making for a pretty eclectic mix. "It was great fun...for me," he laughed. "I'm sure they had a hell of a time. I can be a bit much. But thanks to Martha, I now know how make a shiv out of a doily."
How exactly does one judge a Halloween costume contest? We asked Hal to share with us some of the criteria he was looking for. "I'm all about practicality," he explained. "You can have the best costume in the world, but if it won't hold up to a night of tricking and treating, what's the point? I've seen some amazing costumes that you would need a forklift to get up a flight of stairs. How are you supposed to pick someone up if you need three people to pick you up?"
"I've got a renewed appreciation for people who treat Halloween like it's their own one person Comic-Con," he continued. "These people are serious. And it's because they love the joy of dressing up. I also have decided we'd be a better society if everyone had to wear clothing that took you three hours to put on and five hours to take off. We would make more cautious decisions, I think."
Hal's a creative person, so we couldn't resist asking him what his favorite costume he ever donned was - and it's a pretty cool one. "I loved being The Crow. It was one of the easiest and most dynamic costumes I ever wore. I loved the movie and it felt very personal," he told us, adding that "This year is my son's first Halloween where he actually will understand the concept of dressing up. I'm excited to revisit the holiday through his eyes. Spooky stuff and all."
In addition to helping out with the Halloween Bash, he's in the middle of filming more episodes of Lab Rats for Disney XD, which he's excited about. "It's going to be the biggest thing I think Disney XD has ever done," he enthused. "The whole season is plotted out from top to tail. I don't want to give anything away, but we face multiple super foes this season."
And that's not all this crazy talented dude is working on. "My band ZERO 1 is working on our next record, The Sacred Nothing," he added, "and I'm about to start the Sexy Liberal Comedy Tour again with John Fugelsang and Stephanie Miller."
But this Saturday night, you can enjoy his witty observations as he helps spread Halloween cheer on The Hub. And if you happen to see Hal out trick-or-treating this Halloween, what should you give him? "A caramel apple," he told us. We'll keep one handy, just in case.
