A couple of months ago, ten year old Ruth Martinez was diagnosed with leukemia. Since then, she's had to travel twice a week to San Antonio's Methodist Hospital to get treatments. The family's had some challenges trying to get her to San Antonio, being that they don't have the appropriate vehicle to get her there.
Ruth's mother started holding plate sales in hopes of buying a van, so she can travel a bit more comfortably. A couple of hairstylist heard about her situation through the plate sales and decided to help in their own way. They contacted her mother and grandmother (also a hairstylist) with their idea and got started.
The idea of the event was to help raise money for the family with donations of $5 per hair cut. The organizers then started spreading the word to other hairstylist around town to see who would like to volunteer. The owner of the International Academy of Cosmetology, Mrs. Aguilar, was the one who provided her facility for the event.
Some hairstylist were at the event from 8 am, which was about the time they started letting people in until about 5 pm. Other hairstylist showed up randomly and seeing how many people had turned up, even volunteered to jump in and help out. Hair donations were made to the Locks of Love from 3 different girls that offered their own hair. Even though the cause was a serious one, all the hairstylists were genuinely happy to be doing what they love doing for such an important cause!
