Hair trends from New York Fashion Week Spring 2014

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week wrapped up last week in New York City. The clothing and accessories that you’ll find in the stores next spring were all a part of the big show. But so was the hair. Taking inspiration from the lines and designers themselves, expert stylists created looks that accentuated the new designs. Don’t forget to pair these great hairstyles with your new spring look.

Beach waves

Beach wavy hair was used to reflect the new laid-back Southeast Asian apparel by Timo Weiland. LʼOréal Professionnel Artist Joseph DiMaggio prepped roots and ends with L’Oreal Professionnel Volumetry Root Spray and True Grip Texturizing Powder. He twisted the hair into a low ponytail, heated it with a flat iron and secured it into a bun.
After the bun set, he loosed the hair and tousled the sections to create beach waves.

Fishtail braids

Over at the show for the Houghton Spring 2014 collection, it was all about the fishtail braids. The braids reflected the dreamy feminine organza skirts and silk tunics from designer Katherine Polk. L’Oréal Professionnel Artist Laura Polko created the shabby-chic braids by applying a cocktail of L’Oréal Professionnel Mousse Volupté and L’Oréal Professionnel Volumetry Root Spray from roots to ends on damp hair. She then parted strands and used L’Oréal Professionnel True Grip texturizing powder to add body them made a low ponytail. After teasing hair with fingers at the crown, each ponytail was styled into a classic or fishtail braid (see video). To finish, Polko pulled out pieces from the braids gently to create a roughed-up, lived-in feel and set it with hairspray.

Futuristic waves

At the ICB Spring 2014 show, it was all about holographic patterns and street chic pieces. Designer Prabal Gurung wanted something futuristic.
“For the hair look, I was inspired by a ‘90s raver girl,” said Gurung. "And Anthony really brought that to life."
L’Oréal Professionnel Artist Anthony Turner center parted dampened hair and then used L’Oréal Professionnel Lift Extrême mousse to make hair weightless with volume and body. Afterwards, he applied L'Oréal Professionnel Volumetry Root Spray directly to the roots. Sections were then blow dried with fingers, and ends were lightly scrunched for texture. It was finished off with L’Oréal Professionnel Infinium 3 hairspray.
