Hair transplant/restoration surgery – Important facts about procedure

Whenever you're dealing with serious hair loss, it's natural to search for the perfect hair restoration solution, whether surgical or non-surgical. At, you will find the hair restoration specialists you can trust to offer you a way to treat thinning hair that actually works. Both men and women have been helped to achieve fuller, natural hair growth.

One of the options for hair restoration is surgical hair transplantation. Hair Restoration Surgery is currently the only proven way to restore hair to thinning or bald areas of the scalp. It involves taking hair grafts from the back of the head and implanting them in areas of the scalp that lack appropriate hair growth. Once implanted, these grafts will begin the normal hair growth cycle, eventually allowing your own hair to grow naturally in its new location.

A combination of hair restoration processes may be used to produce optimal results. The specific approach will depend on the extent and pattern of hair thinning, and the way the procedure will fit in with your own expectations and lifestyle.

Two approaches to hair transplantation are Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

For FUT, hair is collected from the donor area, an area where you still have plentiful hair, usually the back and sides of the scalp, by removing a thin strip of tissue containing hundreds, even thousands, of hair follicles. The strip is then secured with sutures or surgical staples while the donor area heals. After healing the donor area will have a fine, linear scar that will be camouflaged by natural hair growth.

After the donor strip is harvested, it is positioned under a powerful stereomicroscope and dissected into 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-hair follicular units. These grafts are then implanted into the receiver site, where you have little or no hair. This procedure enables a quick recovery and leaves no scarring in the transplanted area.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

For FUE , grafts are removed one-by-one from the back and sides of the scalp, making use of a small, round cutting instrument carefully guided by hand or with robotic assistance. The tiny holes created by extracting these single follicular units heal in about a week, without the need for stitches. There is no scar left behind to identify the donor sites. A variety of cutting instruments have been developed for use in FUE, with new ones continually being developed. As in FUT, grafts are placed into tiny receiver sites that the surgeon has prepared in the area of thinning hair.

The majority of hair transplants demonstrate extremely good results, with the transplanted hairs entering their growth cycle a few months after the procedure. More than one transplant session might be required to achieve the best results.

In the more than 30 years since hair transplantation was introduced, research has not stopped, and advances in both technology and technique have improved results and patient comfort.

For instance, early transplant procedures involved placement of only 1000 to 1500 hair follicles per session. Now, that number is between 3000 and 3500, and among those with a significant degree of hair loss, up to 4000 hairs may be transplanted during a single session. Placing in excess of 4000 grafts in one session could harm the ability of the grafts to “take”.
