Aligned with Target 5 of the World Cancer Declaration, the Big Chop to Stop Cancer campaign, spearheaded by ZuriWorks™ for Women's Health, seeks to dispel myths and misconceptions about cancer.
To kick off the seven-month campaign, celebrity stylist Johnny Wright, who is also Michelle Obama's stylist, will offer women a once- in- a-lifetime opportunity to have their hair cut and styled like a First Lady.
Wright, who is the national spokesperson for Big Chop to Stop Cancer, is auctioning his services at Big Chop to Stop Cancer to provide customized wigs and cancer support services for by ZuriWorks™ for Women's Health.
The Big Chop to Stop Cancer asks black women to cut their hair to raise cancer awareness.
It also calls for women to raise their collective voices in a call to action to their communities to improve their general knowledge around cancer, while simultaneously challenging misconceptions about black women and their hair.
The campaign will begin on March 14, 2013 starting at the Immortal Beloved Salon located at 1457 Church Street in Washington, DC.
The event - the first of many - will include documentary filming of individuals sharing their experiences in educating others about cancer.
Winners of the big chop auction will debut their hairstyles at a reception following the event. Other events will take place throughout the year culminating on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Through this campaign, Wright and by ZuriWorks™ for Women's Health will work to unite the health, beauty and arts industries in order to save women's lives from cancer. T
heir goal is to raise awareness, increase screening, reduce delays in treatment and to empower women living with cancer to live well.
Individuals, salons and independent hairstylists are invited to register and simultaneously kick off the campaign. Registrants will receive an official campaign decal. The campaign is also accepting corporate sponsors and partnerships.
